My PFD Was Taken for Child Support, But I Have Custody of the Child. How Do I Get My PFD Back?
by: Alaska Legal Services Corporation
In some situations, you may be able to get your PFD back, but not always. If you owe an arrearage from a time when you did not have custody of your child, the Child Support Services Division (CSSD, formerly known as CSED) can still take your PFD (as well as some other sources of income) to pay that arrearage.
To find out why your PFD was taken by CSSD, you should contact your CSSD caseworker. You can also access your child support account online at www.childsupport.alaska.gov, which will show you whether your child support is in arrears.
If you did not have the child support order changed when your child started living with you, it may be that you have been charged your monthly child support anyway and an arrearage has accrued that way. It is important that you let CSSD know right away that you are now caring for your child and a new child support order needs to be entered. All the forms you need for this are available at www.childsupport.alaska.gov.
