How Can I Stop Creditors From Harassing Me?

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, a federal law, controls how creditors are allowed to contact you. You have the right to demand that all communications with you be in writing, and so stop harassing calls. You can also demand that all communications stop unless the creditor decides to sue you.
In order to assert these rights, you should send notice to the creditor in writing. An example of what your letter might say is:
Creditor Name Address
Re: Account number
Dear Sir or Madam:
I am writing to request that you please stop contacting me. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, 15 U.S.C. ยง 1692c(c) requires you to cease all communication with me once you receive this notice. I cannot pay this debt because . Please write off this debt as uncollectable.
If you contact me again, other to inform me that you have terminated further debt collection efforts or that you have filed a law suit, I will consult an attorney about enforcing my rights under the FDCPA.
