If my income is too high for Medicaid, can my child get free health insurance?

  • Yes. You child can get free health insurance under the ALLKids Program if your income is less than 150% of the Federal Poverty Level.
    • For a household of three people, the monthly income limit is $2,012.
  • If your household income falls between 150% and 200% of the Federal Poverty Level, you can buy your children health insurance under the ALLKids Program for a small fee.
    • For a household of three people, the monthly income limit is $2,682.
    • The annual premium is only $50-$60 per child for the first three children; there is no additional premium for 4 or more children.
    • Additionally, you may have a co-pay of up to $5.00 per service.
  • In September 2003 and again several months later, the Health Department put a freeze on the ALLKids program.  Right now, there is no freeze.  If you apply now, your children will go on a waiting list that is only one or two weeks long.

Where do I apply for this free health insurance?

  • To apply for Medicaid and for ALLKids, go to your County Health Department.
  • SOBRA case workers are at some hospitals, and the regional Medicaid Offices also take applications for Medicaid.
