California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation's Immigration and Access to Education Project assists immigrants with citizenship applications, VAWA and U-Visa petitions, and other family-based immigration issues. We provide full representation and brief services. We also conduct community education and leadership forums on immigration law and education access issues.
Among the staff are fluent Spanish-speaking attorneys who work increase access to legal resources for immigrants detained by ICE through direct representation, pro bono referrals, pro se materials, and "Know Your Rights" presentations and who work under our Civil Rights initiative, to increase access to justice for parents, children and families seeking access to equal education opportunities.
Our "Protecting Children of Immigrants" project provides legal education and legal services to immigrant parents to prepare their families for the possibility of detention or deportation. Our staff helps parents develop plans for the care of their children and understand their rights and legal options in the event a family member is detained or deported, including preparing legal documents (e.g., guardianship and caregiver authorizations) for those parents who choose to express their wishes for children's ongoing care in the U.S. and preserve custody of their children.
