American Civil Liberties Union of the Nation's Capital (ACLU)

Volunteer lawyers provide legal representation in selected civil liberties areas.  Cases can involve free speech, police practices, and students' rights.  ACLU also handles cases involving government employees' rights, including invasion of privacy, employment discrimination (if based on religion, sex, race, or age), problems relating to loyalty oaths and security, and protection of whistle blowers.    ACLU has a good program of AIDS-related litigation.

ACLU accepts primarily class action and test cases, usually complaints against a government agency or public system and not against an individual.
