Children's Law Center
Children's Law Center (CLC) envisions a future for the District of Columbia in which every child has a safe home, a meaningful education and a healthy mind and body. We work towards this vision by providing legal services to at-risk children and their families and using the knowledge we gain from representing our individual clients to advocate for changes in the law and its implementation. All of our legal services are provided at no cost to our clients. Currently, we are focusing on providing free legal services to:
-
Foster and kinship caregivers wishing to give permanent homes to abused and neglected children through adoption, guardianship or custody;
-
Grandparents and other relatives interested in DC's Grandparent Subsidy Program;
-
Parents whose children receive primary care from the Children's Health Center or Adolescent Health Center at Children's National Medical Center or one of the other five Children's Health Center primary care clinic locations (Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue; Adams Morgan; Good Hope Road; Shaw; THEARC) or Mary's Center for Child and Maternal Health. The main practice areas are: education/special education, access to health care including mental health, and housing conditions.
-
Low and moderate income third party (non-parent) caregivers seeking custody of children who are in their care;
-
Low income caregivers seeking to adopt at-risk children for whom they have been caring through private adoption proceedings.
