Choose How To File Your Tax Return

Many free tax filing options are available.  Which one is the best for you depends on your income, age, and where you live.

It also depends on whether you want to prepare and file your tax return yourself, or if you would like someone to prepare and file it for you.

Do you want to file your tax return yourself?
If so, these options are available to you:

  • I-CAN!E-File.  I-CAN!E-FileTM will help you do your taxes for free, and it's easy to do.  You don't need to be a computer expert, either.  Just answer a few questions at the icanefile.org website and I-CAN will prepare your tax forms for you - both state and federal.  If you do not have a computer and internet access available to use I-CAN, utilize one of the free Internet locations across the state - just click here or go to the "Free Internet Locations" section of this website.

Who Qualifies to Use I-CAN:  You can generally use I-CAN!? E-file UNLESS you have a foreign address, own a business, are a church employee or clergy member, or sold real estate in 2007. If you are in the military or you are disabled you may be eligible for tax credits that are not included in I-CAN!? E-file.

  • IRS Free File.  IRS Free File allows on-line federal income tax preparation and e-filing through a partnership agreement between the IRS and members of the tax software industry.  Some vendors also offer free state tax filing services as well.  Click here to access the IRS Free File website.

Who Qualifies to Use IRS Free File:  Anyone with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $54,000 or less may use this free service.  Some of the IRS Free File software companies have additional requirements so read the instructions carefully.  And, not all of the IRS Free File vendors offer free state tax filing.

Would you like someone to prepare
your tax return for you?
If so, these options are available to you:

  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program.  VITA is an IRS program that offers free tax preparation services.  Sites are run by trained volunteers and are located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, credit unions, and so on.  To find a VITA site near you, click here or go to the "Tax Site Locations" link found on the left of your screen.  You may also call  To locate the nearest VITA site, call 1-800-829-1040

Who Qualifies to Use Services at VITA Sites:  Anyone with a household income of less than $40,000 per year (income eligibility generally changes annually).  Taxpayers with complex tax returns may not be eligible.

  • AARP Tax-Aide Georgia.  This program, in partnership with the IRS and AARP, offers free tax preparation to those age 60 and older, and also to low- and moderate-income people under age 60.  To find an AARP Tax-Aide site near you, click here or go to the "Tax Site Locations" link found on the left of your screen.  You may also call (888) 227-7669 or visit the AARP Tax-Aide website to find a location near you.

Who Qualifies to Use Services at AARP Sites:  Anyone age 60 or older, regardless of income.  Those under 60 years of age who are low- to moderate-income are also eligible to use the AARP tax services.
