Employment Programs for Seniors

EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS FOR SENIORS
Older people have many skills and abilities that make them valuable to businesses and agencies. Many of these persons want to work but have difficulty finding jobs. Some who want to work need further training to equip them for successful employment. Older worker programs provide necessary training in occupations that are in demand and assist people over the age of 55 in locating suitable work. The following two programs are available in all areas of the state.
SENIOR COMMUNITY SERVICES EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM (SCSEP):
This state and federally-funded program provides community service work assignments in the public and private sectors for persons age 55 and over who meet income criteria. During this period of community service, enrollees receive skills training and job search guidance. Program counselors assist workers in locating jobs in the private and public sectors, following their training and work experience.
JOB TRAINING PARTNERSHIP ACT (JTPA):
This federally funded program is operated by Green Thumb, Inc., a private, non-profit agency. It provides training and job search assistance for people who meet certain income criteria. Enrollees in the Senior Community Service Employment Program are eligible for co-enrollment in JTPA. Training for qualified older individuals includes computer and other office technologies, certified nursing assistance, and other skills in demand occupations.
Agencies in some areas of the state also provide assistance in finding jobs for older persons regardless of income. People needing information concerning training and job search assistance should contact their Area Agency on Aging.
