Your Child Should Still Get Medicaid--Even If Social Security Decides Your Child Is No Longer Disabled

Last Revised: August 2004

Children in Georgia who receive SSI (Supplemental Security Income) checks also get Medicaid.

The Social Security Administration may have sent you a notice saying it will review your child's SSI case because of new disability guidelines.

However, even, if the Social Security Administration decides your child can no longer get SSI because of these changes, the child can still get Medicaid.

Medicaid has separate rules from SSI.  A new federal law says states must still give Medicaid to children who lose their SSI because of new disability rules.

There should be no break in your child's Medicaid coverage.  You should not have to fill out a new application.

If your child's Medicaid is cut off, ask for a fair hearing right away.  You may request a hearing at your county Department of Family and Children's Services.
