What is the Kinship Care Project?
The Kinship Care Project provides critical legal help and outreach to low-income grandparents and other relative caregivers of children who need stable loving homes.
How do relative caregivers legally secure their relationship to a child?
In Georgia, a relative may establish a legal relationship with the child by obtaining custody, guardianship, or through an adoption.
Why is it important for relatives to establish a legal relationship with the child?
A relative caregiver with legal custody is able to make decisions about the child's care, enroll the child in school and obtain the child's records.Adoption may also qualify the child for social security benefits or adoption assistance.
What other legal services does the Kinship Care Project offer?
The Kinship Care Project can assist families with obtaining financial assistance to help them raise their relative's children. Families may be able to get Peachcare, Medicaid, Healthy Start, Social Security, adoption assistance, food stamps, and TANF.Additionally, families may get legal assistance with housing, education, and consumer issues.
How does a relative caregiver obtain assistance?
Contact your local Georgia Legal Services Program office.
Families residing in Bartow, Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Fayette, Floyd, Gordon, Greene, Haralson, Heard, Henry, Morgan, Newton, Paulding, Polk, Rockdale, Spalding, and Walton may contact the Piedmont GLSP Office at 1-800-822-5391.
Families residing in Bryan, Bulloch, Candler, Chatham, Effingham, Emanuel, Evans, Liberty, Long, Tattnall, and Toombs may contact the Savannah GLSP Office at 1-888-220-8399.
Families residing in Burke, Columbia, Glascock, Jefferson, Jenkins, Lincoln, McDuffie, Richmond, Screven, Taliaferro, Warren, Washington, and Wilkes may contact the Augusta GLSP Office at 1-800-248-6697.
