The Legal Aid Society of Hawaii offers a tax service called the Low-Income Taxpayer Project (LITC), which provides tax preparation, education on taxpayer responsibilities and various tax issues, and legal assistance. These services are free of charge to those who qualify, although in some cases clients are responsible for paying court costs and filing fees.
The kinds of tax cases Legal Aid handles include 1) innocent spouse relief requests, 2) injured spouse claims, 3) audits or examinations, 4) earned income tax credit appeals, 5)deficiency notices, 6) liens and levies, 7) negotiations and/or settlements of tax debt, and 8) employee/independent contractor disputes.
Legal Aid is Hawaii’s largest non-profit law firm, with 9 offices on the 6 islands. Legal Aid concentrates its efforts on assisting low-income individuals with their non-criminal legal matters. Although the LITC project is partially funded by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), ssistance is independent from the IRS. All telephone conversations and client interviews are confidential.
