It will soon be easier to file a divorce in Iowa if you cannot afford to pay an attorney. The Iowa Supreme Court is now looking at forms for Iowans to file a divorce without an attorney, where there are no children involved.
In the State of the Judiciary address, chief justice Marsha Ternus had this to say:
"Once the forms and instructions are finished, the court will make them available in our clerks’ offices and on our website. We do not plan to stop with the introduction of these forms, however. Over time, we intend to adopt more forms and instructions to assist self-represented litigants with other court procedures. These efforts are important because they will enhance court access for Iowans who cannot afford an attorney."
The first set of divorce forms may only be used for couples who do not have minor children. The court will provide all of the forms needed to start and finish a divorce without children in Iowa. There will be complete instructions with each form and information on how to file a divorce. Information on how to represent yourself in court is already available at "How to Represent Yourself" on the Judicial Branch website.
Check back on our website or the Judicial Branch website in the future for links to the forms. |
