Dental Care for Persons With Disabilities

Children and young adults with disabilities from low-income families may be eligible for free dental care through a program coordinated by the University of Iowa.
The statewide program, Dental Care For Persons With Disabilities, is administered by the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the UI College of Dentistry, the Center for Disabilities and Development, and the Iowa Department of Public Health.
To qualify, a participant must be an Iowa resident younger than 21 years of age and have a physical, emotional or developmental disability. Participant's family income must total less than 200 percent of the federal poverty guideline. Those with any form of dental insurance, such as Medicaid (Title XIX), Hawk-I, etc. are not eligible to participate in this program.
This program provides up to $300 per year in preventive and restorative dental treatment, including examinations and dental sealants. Because of limited funding, orthodontic and extensive cosmetic reconstruction is not available.
Dental services are provided at the Center for Disabilities and Development in Iowa City and private dental offices across the state. Participating dentists are located in Ames, Bellevue, Carroll, Council Bluffs, Creston, Des Moines, Laurens, Maquoketa, Marion, Marshalltown, Mason City, Monona, Monticello, Pella, Sioux Center, Sioux City, Story City, Waterloo, Waukon, and West Burlington.
