Getting Free Care at One of Iowa's County Hospitals
by: Iowa Legal Aid

Any resident of a county with a county hospital may be able to get free care from the hospital if they meet certain conditions.

  1. The county must maintain a "county hospital."

Iowa has forty-three (43) county hospitals. Property taxes go to support these county hospitals. A list of the county hospitals is below.

  2. You must be low-income. The board of trustees for the county hospital sets the standards.

You can go to the business office of a county public hospital and ask for a copy of their standards to see if you are able to get free care and treatment.

  3. You must be a resident of the county the hospital serves.

A person is a resident of a county when the person declares the county is his or her home with the intent to remain there permanently or for a definite or indefinite length of time.

Iowa law requires county hospitals to provide free care in the hospital. It does not require doctors or other staff who do not work for the hospital to provide free care.

You should check with the business office to see if you may qualify for free care. There is no time limit to apply for free care, so you can even ask that older bills be covered.

If you think you should be able to get free care and are turned down, and cannot resolve the problem with the county hospital on your own, contact your local Iowa Legal Aid office.
