Getting Help With a Substance Abuse Problem

If you, a friend or a family member needs help for a drug or alcohol problem, there are programs and facilities that can help. 

Where can I get help paying for substance abuse treatment? 

  • Iowa's Medicaid program (or Title 19) pays for some substance abuse treatment.  You can apply for Medicaid at any Department of Human Services Office.  Call 1-800-972-2017 to find an office near you.  Find out more about Medicaid on the Iowa Legal Aid Website.*
  • Medicare pays for substance abuse treatment in some outpatient centers. You have to help pay for the services. Call 1-800-633-4227 to learn more about Medicare.  Find more details about Medicare on the Iowa Legal Aid Website.*
  • The United States Department of Veterans' Affairs has substance abuse treatment at its facilities. To find out if you can get help there call 1-800-827-1000.  Find out more on the Iowa Legal Aid Website, including a link to a site where you can find the Veterans' Affairs medical facility near you.*
  • There are several Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers in Iowa that have substance abuse treatment if you are on Medicaid and Medicare. Some centers have free or low-cost services depending on your income. The Centers also help people with private insurance or no insurance. 

How can I find a facility that can help me?

  • Iowa's Drug and Alcohol Help Line can help.  Call 1-866-242-4111 anytime (this is a free call).  
  • The United States Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Hotline can answer questions about mental health issues. Call 1-800-789-2647 on Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern time.
  • The United States Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration free Referral Helpline can help you find a treatment facility in your area.  Call at 1-800-662-4357. You can also go to the Iowa Legal Aid Website for a link to where you can search for a facility on the Internet.*
  • The Des Moines Register's web site has information about methamphetamine addiction, including links to programs that can help. Go to the Iowa Legal Aid Website for a link to that resource.*
