Changes in Testing for Students with Disabilities: What It Means to You and Your Child
by: Advocacy Center
Q.What is new with state testing?
A.Because of federal and state requirements, students with disabilities will take part in statewide testing in some way.  In grades 3, 5, 6, 7, and 9, students now take the iLEAP which replaces the IOWA achievement tests given in those grades until 2006.
Q.What is different now?
A.For parents and guardians, they must help decide the type of testing situation for their child.  For students, the type of testing situation may be different.  Depending on the testing situation, a student may receive a high school diploma or a Certificate of Achievement.
Q.What are the different types of testing situations?
A.

They are:

1.     Regular statewide assessment, and

2.     Alternate assessment

Q.What is alternate assessment?
A.

Alternate assessment is testing for students with disabilities who meet participation requirements.  It may lead to a Certificate of Achievement instead of a diploma.  Your child may qualify if:

1.     Your child's program focuses on functional and life skills

2.     The IEP team decides that your child meets certain criteria.

Q.What can I do if my child does not qualify for alternate assessment?
A.Your child will qualify for regular testing and will be required to participate in it.
