FILE A 2007 TAX RETURN
TO QUALIFY FOR THE ECONOMIC STIMULUS REFUND
1. What must I do to get a rebate check? File a 2007 tax return showing qualifying income of $3,000 or more.
2. What if my income is low and I am not required to file a tax return? File a 2007 tax return anyway. If you have qualifying income of at least $3,000, you may qualify for a rebate payment.
· Minimum rebate payment: $300 for individuals, $600 for joint filers, plus $300 for each qualifying child
· Maximum rebate payment: $600 for individuals, $1,200 for joint filers, plus $300 for each qualifying child.
3. What if I receive Social Security or veterans' disability benefits? These benefit payments qualify as income for the rebates. If you have at least $3,000 of qualifying income, you should file a 2007 tax return. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments do not count as qualifying income.
4. Where can I go for help in filing a tax return? Low and moderate income workers can get free help through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Call 1-800-657-3989 or click here for the nearest location or click here for legal help with your tax problem.
5. When will rebate refunds be issued? The U.S. Treasury Department will begin sending payments in May, 2008.
6. What if I move before I get my refund? If you request direct deposit on your tax return, your rebate check will be direct deposited also. If your rebate will be sent to you by mail, you should notify the IRS by filing Form 8822, Change of Address, and also file a change of address card with the U.S. Postal Service.
7. Where can I receive additional information? Go to the Internal Revenue Service's website at http://www.irs.gov/ or click here for more resources.
