Look at Your Rental Agreement
by: Montana Legal Services Association (MLSA)

Do you have a question about what you can and cannot do in your rental apartment or house? For example, do you want to keep a pet in your rental but you do not know if you can?

If you have any questions about what you can and cannot do in your rental apartment or house:

  1. Look at your rental agreement. A rental agreement is sometimes called a "lease". Many rental agreements say what you can do and cannot do.
  2. If you do not have a copy of your rental agreement, ask your landlord or landlady for a copy. Ask in writing, if possible. He or she should have a copy of your rental agreement.
  3. If your rental agreement does not answer your question, call one of these programs for help:
  •  Montana Legal Services Association HelpLine at 1-800-666-6899;
  • Montana Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Landlord/Tenant Hotline at 1-888-345-7474.

You may lose important legal rights if you do not hire an attorney immediately to advise you. Many people do not check their e-mail daily, and some attorneys do not respond to unsolicited e-mail from non-clients.
