ADA and People Traveling on a Fixed Route System
by: New Mexico Legal Aid
A public group buys new cares for a fixed route system. The cars have to be ready for disabled people to use.
They must be easy to enter and easy to use by disabled people, and people in wheelchairs.
A Fixed Route System is one that runs on a track or a route. It has to have fixed stops and fixed schedules
The owner of a fixed route system buys or makes a rebuilt vehicle. It is built to last 5 years or more. It must be ready for use by disabled people, including those who are in wheelchairs. It has to be easy to enter and easy to use by disabled people.
The owner of a fixed route system has to have shared vehicle service.
He has to have other special services for people with disabilities.
The service level must be the same as that for people without disabilities.
A "demand and response" line must be on time for all its customers.
When can you ask for special services?
- If you can't get on or off a vehicle without help on a fixed route system.
- If you need a wheelchair lift.
- If you can't get to the pick up point or back from it.
- If you have another person with you.
Other persons can be with you if they do not deny space to other disabled persons and if there is space on the vehicle.
