| WHO WE ARE |
AHRC New York City currently serves 11,000 individuals with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities, and their families.
Assistance with legal difficulties related to the family member with a disability, including assistance with guardianship issues and future care planning.
AHRC offers general and educational advocacy serves to individuals of all ages with developmental disabilities who are experiencing difficulty accessing services or have problems with the services being rendered. The advocacy generally provides assistance with education related issues, but assistance regarding other issues may also be available.
The Advocate will provide assistance in reviewing evaluations, securing additional evaluations, developing strategies to utilize in accessing needed services, explaining rights and negotiating systems. The Advocacy Office conducts trainings for parents and professionals. When necessary, the Advocate will attend CPSE & CSE meetings and Impartial Hearings with city and state agencies. Although the primary focus of the Advocate is education, assistance in accessing other needed services available through city, state, and federal agencies is also provided.
