Legal Information for Families Today (LIFT)
 
WHO WE ARE

Legal Information for Families Today (LIFT) is an innovative nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering unrepresented litigants with legal information and compassionate guidance so that they can successfully self-advocate in Family Court.

LIFT operates innovative, award-winning programs in the Family Courts and in the community. These programs promote positive outcomes for families and children and support the organization's mission: to enhance access to justice for children and families by providing legal information, community education, and compassionate guidance, while promoting system-wide reform of the courts and public agencies.

LIFT serves nearly 35,000 people each year. LIFT's services include:

Family Law Information Telephone & Email Hotlines: Family law information and high-impact referrals to responsive services, including job training programs, public benefits, and community-based social services. The Hotline accepts collect calls from correctional facilities and can be reached at 212-343-1122 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm EST). To ask a question online, please visit www.lifthotline.org.
 

Family Legal Center: One-on-one legal information, assistance in preparing court documents, court accompaniment, referrals, and support groups for people without lawyers in child support, custody, and visitation cases. Located in LIFT's central office at 350 Broadway, Room 501, Manhattan. 

Family Court-based Education & Information Sites and Help Centers: One-on-one legal information about Family Court proceedings and resources, access to LIFT's Legal Resource Guides, volunteer lawyers, and more. Located inside the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens Family Courthouses. 

Legal Resource Guides: More than 30 step-by-step guides to Family Court and family law. Available in 8 languages. Available at LIFT's Courthouse locations, Family Legal Center Resource Library, or can be downloaded online at www.liftonline.org/resource-guides.html. LIFT's programs are available in English and Spanish, free, and open to all.

Directions: Subway: A, C, E, 1, 6, N, Q, R, W to Canal Street; 4, 5, to Brooklyn Bridge; J, M, Z to Chambers Street
The Hotline is open to all callers. However, those wishing to schedule an in-person appointment or who walk-in must be over the age of 21 and involved in or thinking of becoming involved in Family Court without a lawyer. The Family Law Information Hotline accepts collect calls from individuals in correctional facilities.

  The Hotline accepts Collect Calls from correctional facilities. The Family Law Information Telephone and Email Hotlines are open and available to everyone with questions regarding a family law or Family Court matter.
This group does not provide legal representation in court.

TYPE OF HELP
This group provides the following types of services based on your legal needs and its resources:
 
  Self-Help Materials- Telephone and email hotlines are available to give Family Law information and referrals on various topics. Call 212-343-1122 or go to www.lifthotline.org to receive further information. Legal resource guides are available on over 30 topics in Family Court and Family Law. You can find this at www.liftonline.org.
  Other- The Family Legal Center provides legal information, assistance with court forms, court accompaniment, referrals to other agencies, and support group information. This is available at the office at 350 Broadway St. LIFT also operates sites at the Courthouses in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. These sites offer legal information and resources, legal guides, and access to volunteer attorneys and more.
