WHO WE ARE

The Canton office of the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York provides civil legal services to low income residents of St. Lawrence County and the St. Regis Indian Reservation.  We provide advice, brief service, referrals, community legal education and full representation in a variety of civil legal matters.  Please contact the office for more information on services provided under special projects:  Foreclosure Prevention Project, Disability Advocacy Project, Senior Legal Services, service for victims of domestic violence, and protection & advocacy services for the mentally and physically disabled.

Legal Aid also has offices in Albany, Amsterdam, Plattsburgh and Saratoga Springs.  Please use directory to access information on how to contact each individual office. Or go to our website at www.lasnny.org

St. Regis Indian Reservation ONLY within Franklin County.
Languages for which interpreters can be provided: We provide an interpreter for all languages through Language Line

Income Guidelines: 
  Your family's income should be at or below 125.0% of the poverty level.

  Callers must be a citizen or legal resident of the U.S. and must reside in St. Lawrence County or the St. Regis Reservation
 
Some special projects have income caps at 150% or 200% of the federal poverty guidelines or no income caps at all. Additionally, households with incomes up to 200% of poverty may be eligible for services depending upon their fixed debts and obligations, employment-related or medical expenses, and other factors.

TYPE OF HELP
This group provides the following types of services based on your legal needs and its resources:
 
  Full Legal Representation- Full representation will be provided according to program resources, availability of staff or special grant guidelines.
  Brief Advice- In most instances, advice or brief service; if a case falls within one of our special projects, full representation is possible. Regrettably, due to limited resources, LASNNY cannot provide representation to everyone who calls.

Emergency Instructions
If your problem is an emergency as described below, follow the contact instructions for emergency cases. Most offices are open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., unless otherwise noted.
 
What is an Emergency?  Immediate lack of food, shelter or clothing; a court or other legal deadline within one week; taking of child by unauthorized person, including CPS, or domestic violence victim with safety issue.
