Andolan - Organizing South Asian Workers

Andolan is a membership-based group that organizes and advocates on behalf of immigrant South Asian workers. Most of Andolan?s members are employed as babysitters, housekeepers, and restaurant workers. Andolan has three main program areas: (1) providing support and resources to workers through workshops, individual support, and facilitating the exchange of information among workers; (2) bringing lawsuits against abusive employers; and (3) organizing, educating, and conducting outreach to new workers through campaigns.

Among the Association's organizing and educational programs are the Beyond Ground Zero network, Occupational Health and Safety Project, Garment Workers' Committee, Women's Project, Chinese Construction Workers' Association, Restaurant Workers' Committee, and English and citizenship classes.

The Women Workers Project seeks to develop leadership among and create spaces for Asian women to unite with other immigrant workers to fight sweatshop conditions and build power for all low-wage workers City-wide. To this end, Women Workers Project organizes Asian immigrant women working in the new and growing service sectors of New York City, such as domestic work, nail salons, and laundries.
DAMAYAN Migrant Workers Association

DAMAYAN Migrant Wokers Association, Inc. is an independent non-profit grassroots organization based in New York and New Jersey that upholds and promotes the rights and welfare of Filipino migrant workers. At the core of DAMAYAN is the leadership of highly committed Filipina domestic workers--nanies, babysitters, cooks, and housekeepers. DAMAYAN provides assistance with labor grievances such as unpaid wages and referrals to doctors or lawyers. DAMAYAN also runs a referral system where domestic workers are be matched with employers based on terms and conditions set and agreed upon by both parties.

Division of Employment Services offices offer many DOL programs in a single location -- including career-related assistance. Staff at these centers have been cross-trained in Department services so they can address more completely the needs of employers and job seekers.

Domestic Workers United (DWU) is a city-wide, industry-wide alliance of domestic workers and domestic worker organizations that have come together to gain respect and recognition for domestic workers, and establish fair labor standards in an industry where abuse and exploitation are the norm. DWU has launched a campaign which seeks to promote a standard contract for all domestic work, including basic workers rights to sick days and vacation, and protection from discrimination and unjust firings.

Global Workers coined the term portable justice to describe the right and ability of transnational migrant workers to access justice in the countries of employment even after they have departed for their home countries.

Workers Awaaz is a membership based organization of South Asian low-wage and domestic workers. South Asian workers include those of Bangladeshi, Indian, Nepali, Pakistani and Sri Lankan origin; as well as those from the Caribbean, Fiji, Guyana, Africa, Southeast Asia and other parts of the Diaspora. This organization advocates on behalf of domestic workers (housekeepers, nannies and cooks) to obtain unpaid wages and improved working conditions.
