South Bronx Action Group, Inc

As it has for more than three decades, South Bronx Action Group, Inc., (SBAG) provides a wide variety of services to persons concerned with the communities of Mott Haven, Melrose and Port Morris - commonly known as "the South Bronx". SBAG's mission is focused on tenant related matters such as housing, social services, and citizenship issues. While the focus still remains on tenants, SBAG serves an increasing number of owner-occupied, recently-renovated structures. In such instances, the organization has served as facilitator in Section 8 matters, by assisting owners and tenants in meeting qualification standards; and as mediator in disputes between owner and tenants - both in housing courts and in the community. We make extensive use of community based organizations such as the Citizens Advice Bureau and Bronx Legal Services. We have noted an increase in referrals to us from entities such as the Bronx District Attorney's office, the Victims Services Agency, and elected officials. In many instances, these referrals are of families facing imminent eviction or attempting to escape from domestic violence.

The Community Service Society Tenant Advocacy Project (CSS-TAP) developed a HelpLine for New York's low income tenants who live in or are seeking federally assisted housing.
If you are applying for or living in public or Section 8 (or other federally-assisted) housing, and are experiencing problems with your application or tenancy, TAP can help! Please call 212-614-5347 and leave a voicemail. Their staff will return calls within 3 working days.
TAP is a CSS program that aims to empower New York's poor tenants by providing direct services to clients and technical assistance to community-based organizations that serve them.

Community Service Society - Eviction Prevention Program

This organization provides information, referrals and advocacy for tenants and homeowners threatened with homelessness. They help apply for a "one-shot deal" or ongoing public assistance to pay rent arrears and advise all applicants on eligibility for "Jiggetts" relief. Clients receive referrals to appropriate legal services, budget and credit counseling, or protective services for adults. Their staff follows up until the eviction or foreclosure has stopped and rent or mortgage arrears are paid.

The City-Wide Task Force on Housing Court, Inc. is a non-profit coalition that was established in 1981 to address the systemic challenges to justice in New York City's Housing Court. New York Urban League - Fair Housing Counseling Project

The New York Urban League Fair Housing Counseling Program provides information and assistance to community residents living in Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. Services include information and counseling on housing court procedures, unfair housing practices and housing discrimination.
