The New York State Attorney General's Office prosecutes businesses and individuals engaged in fraudulent, misleading, deceptive or illegal trade practices. This agency also mediates thousands of complaints each year from individual consumers and provides general consumer protection information.

The New York State Department of Banking regulates mortgage bankers, brokers and other licensed lenders in New York State. You can contact them to check if a lender is licensed, or to file a complaint against a lender.

   Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) (Separate Website)
The AAFE Community Development Fund is a subsidiary of Asian Americans for Equality-- a community based, not-for-profit organization established in 1974, committed to community service and empowerment targeting immigrants, low-income families and minorities throughout New York City. AAFE's programs and services include housing development, homeownership, comprehensive social services, civil rights, economic development and technical assistance. AAFE operates out of four locations in the Chinatown/Lower East Side areas of Manhattan and Flushing, Queens. All services are provided in English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Hindi, and Urdu.

   Community Service Society - Eviction Prevention Program (Separate Website)
This organization provides information, referrals and advocacy for tenants and homeowners threatened with homelessness. They help apply for a "one-shot deal" or ongoing public assistance to pay rent arrears and advise all applicants on eligibility for "Jiggetts" relief. Clients receive referrals to appropriate legal services, budget and credit counseling, or protective services for adults. Their staff follows up until the eviction or foreclosure has stopped and rent or mortgage arrears are paid.
