Get a Bank Account Without a Social Security Number
Banks are safe places to put your money until you need to spend it, and many offer ways to help you save money. You may have thought that only someone with a Social Security number could get a bank account. However, there are some banks now that accept identification other than a Social Security number. They let citizens of other countries use their passport or consular identification to open a bank account. Not all banks accept these alternative forms of identification, so check around at different banks in your area. If you are from Mexico, call the Mexican Consulate in Portland at (503) 274-1442 for information on how to get a consular identification card.
