Domestic Violence is Not Acceptable
by: El Noticiero Legal
Domestic violence is a crime.
Free help is available for all persons who have been physically abused, threatened with abuse or forced to have sexual relations. Crisis centers can provide free counseling and support. Shelters can provide free emergency housing for persons who have been abused and their children. Legal assistance is also available. Victims of domestic violence can get a free court order to protect them from further abuse. The court order can also make the abuser move from the home and stay away from schools or the work place. The police can arrest an abuser who violates the court order. The police must arrest an abuser when they are called to the scene of a domestic disturbance. Domestic violence can result in the deportation of an abuser and also prevent an abuser from becoming a lawful resident or US citizen. Spouses who are in the process of becoming legal residents through their marriage to a person who has abused them can complete the visa process without the help of the abuser. For more information, call the nearest legal services office.
