Send Money to Mexico Safely

If you want to send money to friends and family in Mexico, there are many different ways to do so, and some are safer than others.  One option is to use the ASure Money Transfer@ program of the U.S.  Postal Service.  It sends money electronically and guarantees that your money will be received in Mexico or you will get a refund (with some exceptions).  Call toll free 1-888-368-4669 in Spanish or English, or go to your local post office to get more information about this program, and to see if this service is offered in your city.

Western Union usually charges a higher price but also sends money electronically and guarantees that the money will arrive in México.  Look in the Yellow Pages to find a Western Union office near you.

A less expensive option, but not as safe, is a money order.  You can buy a postal money order at your local post office.  If your money is lost or stolen, report to the post office immediately.  The post office will check to make sure no one has cashed the money order and should return the money within 30 days, although it can take up to one year to settle a claim.  You can often find other money orders, such as those from Western Union, at many local convenience stores.

E-mail. Viewing this web site, or sending an e-mail message to any legal services program or any attorney mentioned on this web site does NOT create an attorney-client relationship between you and the legal services program or the attorney. Unless you are already a client of the attorney, your e-mail may NOT be protected by the attorney-client privilege. Also, in some situations, e-mail can be intercepted by persons other than the recipient. Many people do not check their e-mail daily, and most attorneys do not respond to unsolicited e-mail from non-clients. If you have a legal problem, you should not rely on email to try to find an attorney to assist you.
