Need to Renew Your Green Card?
In 1989 the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) began putting expiration dates on all green cards. You will not be deported because you have an expired green card, but you may have problems using your expired card to apply for a job, get public benefits, or travel outside this country.
To renew your card you need to fill out form I-90. You can get this form by calling the INS forms line at 1-800-870-3676. Along with the form you need to turn in your old green card, a money order for $130 and another ID card with your photo on it. You may also want to have $50 ready in case you need fingerprints. If you cannot pay these fees you may not have to, if you request a "fee waiver" in writing and show that you do not have the money to pay the fee. You can take all of this to your local INS office and get temporary evidence that you are a permanent resident. There is a special INS office in Portland that you can go to for green card renewal. The address is: 721 SW 14th Ave., Portland, OR 97250. INS will then mail you a new green card that will expire in ten more years.
