The Queens Legal Services Domestic Violence Law & Advocacy Project provides comprehensive services for domestic violence survivors consisting of
- A 24-hour hotline to provide crisis intervention and counseling.
- Information and referral services, linking victims of domestic violence to shelters, medical treatment, and other community-based programs to meet each individual's specific needs.
- Advocacy for victims of domestic violence, which includes legal representation involving Orders of Protection, child custody, child and spousal support, divorce, safe visitation, immigration matters including VAWA Self-Petition and U-Visas.
- Related counseling by a social worker with a masters degree in social work and experience in domestic violence.
- Community outreach and education, which includes training staff of neighborhood-based organizations throughout Queens on domestic violence issues, with a particular emphasis on the immigrant and other underserved communities.
- Representation of parents in Family Court whose children are subject of child abuse and neglect proceedings or are placed in the foster care.
The Domestic Violence hotline number is 347-592-2179. It can be called 24 hours a day and takes messages if no staff is available when a call comes in. All calls are returned promptly.
