Zip code and county/borough
Enter the zip code or county/borough of the person who needs help. It is better to enter the zip code because many groups do not serve all of a certain county or borough. If you search by county or borough, check the full description of each organization for the specific zip codes it serves.

Income guidelines
Some organizations have income guidelines that people must meet to receive assistance. If someone has an income higher than the income guidelines, that person will not qualify for assistance. If an organization has income guidelines, it will usually appear as a percentage of the federal poverty guidelines or as an income amount (example: $18,000/year). A personal asset may also be a factor in whether he or she qualifies for assistance. LAW HELP does not guarantee that you will be able to receive assistance from an organization even if you meet its income guidelines.
Below is a chart that is based on the federal poverty guidelines set each year by the Department of Health and Human Services. The chart lists the percentages of the federal poverty guidelines most commonly used by legal services organizations. The "Family Size" is the total number of people in the household

Income exceptions
An organization may also list instances in which it can assist a person whose income is higher than the income guidelines. For example, an organization may make exceptions for seniors, people who are HIV positive, or people experiencing domestic violence. Some organizations determine income eligibility by taking expenses such as child care, medical bills, and debts into account.
