Kids
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has made a rule concerning 900 number services.
This rule requires 900 number services to provide you with certain details.
It also offers other safeguards for you and your kids.
Can companies direct ads toward my kids?
- Companies can't try to get kids under 12 to call their 900 numbers. Some companies do it anyway.
- For example, they may try to get kids to call and talk to a cartoon character.
- But, if the service offered is educational in nature, that is allowed.
What about ads directed to kids between ages 12 and 18?
If ads are aimed at kids under age 18, they must say that the kids must get their parent's permission.
Messages at the beginning of all 900 number calls must also say this.
How can I protect my kids?
- Talk with your children. Make sure they understand they shouldn't call 900 numbers without asking you first.
- You can have the phone company block 900 number calls from your phone.
- Where the phone company can block 900 numbers, they must do so for a reasonable fee.
- If you get a new number you can request free blocking within 60 days after your new service begins.
