Program News > 2008 Poverty Guidelines and Free Legal Services -- Update

Whether a person can get free legal help from some legal aid and legal services programs depends on his or her income.

The income guidelines are based on 125% and 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. Some programs limit help to those under the 125% mark, and with exceptions for those between 125% and 200%.

Even if you think you make too much money, you should always check with the program that provices free legal help to see if you qualify for free legal aid, since some exceptions may apply.

For more information, and to see the 125% and 200% guidelines, click on the "The Legal System" on the main page of this site, then see the fact sheet on the "Know Your Rights" channel.
