SLLS Funders & Projects

SLLS' funders and the legal services they make possible

Many generous funders, both public and private, support SLLS' work.  Unlike most free legal aid programs, we still receive most of our funding from the federal government.  However, we are proud that our support from state and local government, bar associations, private attorneys, foundations and corporations has grown in recent years.

Federal Government

Internal Revenue Service, Legal Services Corporation, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Administration on Aging

State and Local Government

Capital Area Agency on Aging, City of New Orleans, Civil District Court (Orleans), Governor's Office of Elderly Affairs, Livingston Council on Aging, State of Louisiana, 21st Judicial District Court (Tangipahoa, Livingston, St. Helena), 22nd Judicial District Court (St. Tammany and Washington)

Bar Associations and Attorneys

Louisiana Bar Foundation, Louisiana State Bar Association, New Orleans Bar Association

Foundations, Corporations and Other Donors

Entergy, Gillis W. Long Poverty Law Center (Loyola Law School), New Orleans Artists Against Hunger & Homelessness, Unity for the Homeless

Our partners in the legal community

The Pro Bono Project.  In 6 of the parishes SLLS serves, private attorneys volunteer to take some of our clients’ cases free of charge. These attorneys are assigned cases by the Pro Bono Project, which recruits the volunteers and tries to match cases with attorneys according to their location and interest. The Pro Bono Project also provides attorneys who interview and advise clients of our services.

The Louisiana State Bar Association (LSBA).  Every attorney in the state belongs to the LSBA.  Through its Access to Justice Program, the LSBA supports many projects designed to aid legal services programs in Louisiana, including SLLS.  Examples include projects involving technology, Visitation services, training of staff and clients, and bringing together many members of the legal profession interested in service to the poor.
