Who We Are
Children's Law Center works to give every child in the District of Columbia a solid foundation of family, health, and education. We are the largest provider of free legal services in the District and the only to focus on children. Our 80-person staff partners with local pro bono attorneys to serve more than 2,000 at-risk children each year. We use this expertise to advocate for changes in the District’s laws, policies, and programs. All of our legal services are provided at no cost to our clients. Currently, we are focusing on providing free legal services to:
- Low and moderate income foster and kinship caregivers wishing to give permanent homes to abused and neglected children through adoption, guardianship or custody;
- Low and moderate income third party (non-parent) caregivers (often grandparents or other relatives) seeking custody or adoption of at-risk children who are in their care;
- Parents whose children receive primary care from the Children's Health Center or Adolescent Health Center at Children's National Medical Center or one of the other five Children's Health Center primary care clinic locations (Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue; Adams Morgan; Good Hope Road; Shaw; THEARC) or Mary's Center for Child and Maternal Health. The main practice areas are: education/special education, access to health care including mental health, and housing conditions.
