The Pro Bono Center's Nonprofit Legal Assistance program has been undergoing a concerted effort to update their guides and fact sheets about the creation and governance of nonprofit organizations.
Here is a list of the most recently updated resources:
- Starting a Nonprofit in DC - A how-to guide to that describes some of the basic steps you will need to take before forming a nonprofit organization in DC.
- Nonprofit Guide to Risk Management and Insurance - Nonprofit organizations without risk management plans leave themselves vulnerable to events that can impose staggering costs or shut down their operations entirely. This guide will help you manage such risks and avoid potential consequences.
- Keeping Corporate Minutes - The DC Nonprofit Corporation Code requires a nonprofit's Board of Directors to keep minutes of their meetings as a part of its permanent records. This fact sheet shows you how.
- DMV Charitable Solicitation Requrements - Most states, as well as DC, have laws regulating the solicitation of charitable funds. This guide explains what these requirements are, what they entail, how to comply, and how they differ between DC, Virgina, and Maryland.
