Who We Are

South Carolina Legal Services (SCLS) provides free legal services in a wide variety of civil (non-criminal) legal matters to eligible low income residents of South Carolina.  SCLS is a non-profit corporation, funded by grants from the federally funded Legal Services Corporation,  the South Carolina Bar Foundation, the South Carolina Bar, local United Ways, state court filing fees, and other federal, state and local funding. SCLS serves residents of all areas of the state with field offices located throughout South Carolina.

Income Guidelines

Applicants must also meet our asset guidelines (liquid and non liquid)which are $3,000.00 per person. There are certain exclusions to the asset guidelines.

A person whose gross income exceeds the general income guidelines, but is less than the maximum guidelines, which is 150% of the general guidelines, may be provided assistance if certain exigent circumstances exist.

Normal costs of litigation. A court may allow a client to proceed in forma pauperis, which would relieve the client from having to pay some of those costs.
